APIs (Application Programming Interfaces) serve as technological ecotones where different software systems meet and interact. Like biological interface ecosystems, APIs are characterised by specialised adaptations that facilitate exchange across boundaries. They enable the flow of data and functionality between digital environments, creating opportunities for innovation that wouldn’t be possible in closed systems (Pedro 2024). The explosive growth of the modern internet can be traced directly to the proliferation of these digital interfaces.—Burbano, Andrés. “Interface Ecosystems.”
Ecotones are transition zones between two or more communities or ecosystems. This is an interesting research which shows how APIs can be more than just a way to connecting systems.
